aids s. f. 2 núm. [Brasil] [Medicina] Doença grave, transmitida por via sexual ou sanguínea e caracterizada pela destruição ou pelo desaparecimento das reações imunitárias do organismo. [O agente da sida é o retrovírus VIH. A doença caracteriza-se pela destruição de uma certa classe de glóbulos brancos, os linfócitos T4, suportes da imunidade celular, e traduz-se por um desaparecimento das reações de defesa do organismo. As complicações, que fazem toda a gravidade da doença, devem-se à proliferação maciça de germes (bactérias, vírus, protozoários, fungos) ditos “oportunistas” que se desenvolvem num organismo incapaz de reagir, e nas lesões cancerosas tais como o sarcoma de Kaposi (cancro generalizado à flor da pele) e os linfomas (câncer dos gânglios linfáticos)]. = SÍNDROME DA IMUNODEFICIÊNCIA ADQUIRIDA
